Servant Leadership and Preparing for Change
Change is the only constant in life, it is imperative to manage to it. In being a strong servant leader, I had to get that life isn’t about me, second I had to learn what it is to truly listen, and support people and help them achieve their goals.
“Be humble, have integrity, work hard, and have fun”
At the core of servant leadership is, creating the right environment for change. It is both didactic-theory and orchestrated-artistry. Central to this type of environment is a heavy emphasis on creating an adaptive culture (Jones & George, 2016, P. 304). “Adaptive culture develops an emphasis on entrepreneurship and respect for the employee and allows for organizational structures, such as the cross-functional team structure, that empowers employees to make decisions and motivates them to succeed” (Jones & George, 2016, P. 304). Through establishing an adaptive culture, employees contribute directly to the companies success or failure. E.g., Netflix encourages high performance like a sports team, encourages freedom and responsibility, management through context, building a distributed group of thinkers that are highly aligned and loosely coupled (Dan Croitor, 2017). Through applying these types of adaptive principles to every level of its business, Netflix has managed to stay ahead of its competitors. It fosters an environment for change.
As both leader and manager, It is my obligation to integrate elements of these practices into every organization I find myself a part of.
