Good Managers Must Also Be Good Leaders

As an information leader, I feel it’s essential to be able to effectively blend both aspects of management and leadership to optimally achieve organizational objectives. High-performing organizations are both efficient and effective (Jones, George, 2016 P6). Efficiency is a measure of how well or how productively resources are used to achieve a goal and effectiveness is a measure of the appropriateness of the goals an organization is pursuing and the degree to which the organization achieves those goals (Jones, George, 2016 P5-6). Both efficiency and effectiveness can be achieved through management or leadership. However, leadership without management is chaotic and unpredictable. E.g., lack of process and discipline in product management can generate high-levels of scope creep and development inertia.

However, through effectively using a balanced resource management approach a corporate butterfly-effect is created. Inertia, for example, can be a morale killer that leads to high attrition rates. With a little effort put into managing product requirements intake through to production deployment, level’s of chaos that lead to inertia can be reduced. Reduced levels of inertia and chaos then lead to a more satisfying work experience that then leads to lower attrition rates.

I strive to blend both management and leadership aspects of resource management because I feel it is the only way organization’s truly achieve efficient and effective operational control.
